LONDON, UK –A new anti-impotence pill called Viagra for men to help boost their confidence and improve their life chances, has been available in pharmacies.

It will cost £1.50 for a pack of four 100mg tablets, compared to £1.48 for a pack of four 200mg tablets, the British Medical Journal reported yesterday.

Men in the UK will be able to buy it online from the UK’s online pharmacy, which has been in operation since it launched in February, the online newspaper reported.

The tablets, sold under the brand name Cialis, will be available in 50mg and 100mg strengths, making it the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction.

A pharmacist said the new product, which contains the same active ingredient as the original erectile dysfunction drug, had a “stronger effect” on men’s blood pressure.

“This is the first time we can offer Viagra for men, and this is a hugely welcome addition to our range,” Dr Laura Squire, from Boots pharmacy, said.

The little blue pill, sold as Cialis for £1.50 a tablet, is available in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg strengths. It is priced at £1.50 for a pack of four 100mg tablets.

In a press release, Boots said: “The new Viagra 100mg tablets are clinically proven to help men with erectile dysfunction (ED) last longer in bed and are a very effective treatment for those struggling with the symptoms of low blood pressure.”

The first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction was launched in February 2017 after a study revealed the medication was effective for many men with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels.

The drug has been available on prescription in some cases for years, including heart attacks and strokes, and it is thought to work by helping the blood vessels in the penis relax, allowing blood to flow more easily. The tablets are designed to be taken as needed, but they can be taken regularly and the dose will be decided by your healthcare professional.

Cialis and the other erectile dysfunction treatments for men, which contain the same active ingredient, work in very similar ways.

In the study, published in the British Medical Journal in March this year, researchers analysed data from more than 1,100 participants who suffered from erectile dysfunction.

The study compared the effectiveness of the treatments in people who suffered from the conditions, taking Viagra between six months and five years.

The participants were then asked to take four tablets (two 100mg tablets) daily for at least six months.

Results showed that the treatment significantly improved their blood pressure, improving it by nearly one-third, compared to just one in six people taking the placebo.

“This is a very good treatment for people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and are already starting to see the benefits of Viagra as a new medication,” Squire said.

“This treatment was shown to provide similar results in helping men who are already using the first-line drugs to help improve their blood pressure and other health conditions.

“It’s great news that we have this treatment available for men who have had a stroke, a heart attack or a serious condition like diabetes or heart failure.

“Our hope is that this treatment will be a step forward for men who are struggling to cope with the challenges of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health conditions.

“The launch of this new treatment will make it easier than ever for men who have erectile dysfunction to seek help, and improve their life chances in the years to come,” the pharmaceutical giant said.

The UK’s online pharmacy is currently the only in the UK where men can buy Viagra from the UK’s online pharmacy.

This blog post describes how to use Viagra Connect and the benefits of using it in combination with Cialis Connect.

Benefits of using Viagra Connect and Cialis Connect

  • Viagra Connect contains a medication called sildenafil, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping you achieve and maintain an erection.
  • Cialis Connect contains tadalafil, which is a type of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. This medication helps relax blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow.
  • This medication is not as effective as Cialis Connect in treating erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • It may take several weeks before you start noticing the effects you are experiencing. The effects can last for several hours after taking the medication. However, if they persist or get worse, speak to your healthcare provider or seek medical help right away.

Interactions

A. Top Drug-Drug Interactions:

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).

2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.

3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

Other Drug-Drug interactions:

  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole (used to manage fungal infection)
  • Protease inhibitors (used to manage HIV infection) Ex. ritonavir, lopinavir
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine (medicines used for fits)
  • Rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin (medicines used for bacterial infections)
  • Other medicines used to improve blood flow to the penis (Ex. sildenafil)

B. Drug-Food Interactions:

Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:

  1. Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice: Grapefruit can increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood by interfering with its metabolism. This may amplify side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, or low blood pressure. Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cialis.
  2. Alcohol: Drinking alcohol with Cialis can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of the medication, leading to symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Limiting alcohol intake is recommended while using Cialis.
  3. High-Fat Meals: While Cialis can be taken with or without food, consuming it with a high-fat meal may delay its onset of action. Opt for lighter meals if rapid effectiveness is needed.
  4. Caffeine: Though not a direct interaction, combining Cialis with high caffeine intake might worsen side effects like headaches or increase heart rate in sensitive individuals.
